In roofing appointments, “is it really the investment?” rarely means the conversation is over — it means the real concern hasn’t been found yet. Here is how the documented system runs it, in a roofing setting.
The scene
The proposal is on the table — the complete system, options written out. The homeowner looks at the overall investment and says it’s more than they expected. On a roof, that sentence has three different meanings, and each one is handled differently.
It can be value (they don’t yet see why this system over a basic tear-off), affordability (the number is real money, all at once), or expectation (they anchored on a number a neighbor or an ad put in their head).
The documented response
The response never changes with the trade — it is the documented 7-stage objection framework: Release Pressure, Ask Permission, Gather Feedback, Isolate, Empathize, Respond, Re-Close. Don’t argue. Diagnose.
Diagnose before you touch the number. If it is value, go back to the inspection evidence — the conditions you documented together. If it is affordability, the documented tools are legitimate scope options, actual company promotions, and the monthly investment plan. If it is expectation, walk the scope line by line until the two numbers are measuring the same roof. What the system never does: invent a discount, or disguise a monthly investment plan as one.
“Let me ask you this: if everything about the product, company, installation, and warranty stayed exactly the same, and the investment were comfortably within the range you expected, would you feel ready to move forward?”
How Spar trains this one
Spar’s investment rounds grade the diagnosis first. Reps who reach for a restructure before they know which of the three problems they are solving fail the round — the same way they lose the real roof.
The full objection — all trades — lives at the “is it really the investment?” page, and the roofing track is at Roofing sales training.
In sparring, the homeowner says it the way yours will — and the grade tells you whether you diagnosed it or argued with it. Train the roofing version until the framework is reflex — $29/month. Spar before you knock.
