Field Guide · Choosing & Running the Close

What do I do when they need to talk privately?

You give them the room — before they have to ask for it, and without a flicker of resistance. The porch light close is the system at its most confident: “Tell you what, let me step out on the porch for a minute. You guys talk it over, take your time, and when I come back in, just let me know either way.” Privacy offered freely changes what the private conversation can be.

The short answer

Offer it, exit cleanly, return without pressure

“Tell you what — why don't I step out on the porch for a minute? You guys talk it over, take your time, and when I come back in, just let me know either way.”

The porch light move, as documented in the closing material.

Every element is load-bearing: the rep proposes it (they never have to perform the awkward ask), the exit is complete (no hovering, no eavesdropping lap past the door), the time is theirs (“take your time” said like it's true), and the return is pressure-free (“either way” — a no delivered to a graceful rep is a relationship; a no extracted under pressure is a story they'll tell).

How it runs

When the moment calls for it

The signal is the glance: the look between decision makers that says the next sentence belongs to a conversation you're not in. Reading that glance and offering the porch before it curdles into “we need to think about it” is the whole skill — the same facts, arranged by you, stay a decision being made; arranged by them as an exit line, they become an objection to handle. And the porch only works on a completed foundation: send an unfinished decision out for a private conference and the conference will find the holes. Temperature first, porch second.
